What A Difference 62 Years Can Make!

This rough sketch was in a large manila envelope, along with dozens of other cartoon sketches, I call my CARTOON GHOSTS. The envelope was found deep inside of a closet in my home after more than 20 years. I had forgotten that it still existed. Sixty plus years ago when I was publishing my cartoons I would quickly sketch an idea when it popped into my head and refine it when I had more time. “THE INTRODUCTION” was sketched in this rough form about 1952 or 1953.

At the time I created this cartoon, the subject matter portrayed was rather daring. Would the publication (I can’t recall which one) dare to publish it? It was published. As I recall it resulted in a number of indignant and threatening letters to that publication, many directed at me.

Today, 60+ years later, it would be considered boring and not worth publishing. Then the “rendezvous” were often done secretly, behind locked doors. Today they are done, quite often, in the open. As someone said to me, “Everybody does it any time, anywhere, any place. And ... they may not know or care to know each others names.” Well, that could be a slight exaggeration... or is it?  (See TOO BUSY click here)
